Lockdown: Drastic fall in vehicle registration in April, May in Maharashtra

Vehicle registrations for Maharashtra RTOs have dropped significantly in the last two months following the lockdown. In the same month last year, there were only 27,278 vehicles registered compared to more than 4 lakh vehicles.

This is less than seven percent of the total number of vehicles registered for the same period last year.

According to vehicle registrations, a total of 27,278 new vehicles were registered at 50 regional transport offices in Maharashtra during April and May this year. In the same month last year, the state recorded 4,01,961 vehicles.

The decline in vehicle registration and tax collection following the Kovid-19 outbreak has had a negative impact on RTOs’ revenue collection, a Department of Motor Vehicles official said.

RTOs earned Rs 95.71 crore in April and May. 1,339.67 crore during the same period last year. With a population of over 3.75 crores, Maharashtra collects an income tax of Rs 8,300 crore every year.

Most of the vehicles registered in the last two months were sold in March, an RTO official said. Vehicles cannot be immediately registered due to lockdowns, loan approval delays, and incomplete paperwork. So in the last two months registration has been done, ”he said.

Most of these new vehicles were registered in April compared to May. The Supreme Court had earlier extended the deadline for registration of BS-IV vehicles.

In April, there were 21,535 new vehicles, 17,545 two-wheelers, 1,317 four-wheelers (light motor vehicles), and other heavy vehicles. The number fell to 5,743 in May. This includes 3,045 two-wheelers, 2,597 four-wheelers, and heavy vehicles.

Since March 22, RTO offices have been working with minimal staff except for vehicle registration, which has stopped a lot of work. Of the total new vehicles registered in April and May, 24,649 were non-transit vehicles such as personal cars and two-wheelers, and 2,629 transport or commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses.

The largest number of registered two-wheelers (20,590) followed by cars (3,914) in two months.

Of the 50 RTOs, the latest 1,792 new vehicles have been registered at the Pune RTO in the last two months, where the registration number starts as ‘MH-12’.

Mumbai’s four RTOs registered 2,822 vehicles (or 6.28 percent in the same period in 2019), including 2,062 two-wheelers and 276 four-wheelers, down from 44,939 vehicles in the same period last year.

The Tardio RTO (MH-01) has the highest number of 852 vehicles. Wadala RTO (MH-O3), Borivali RTO (MH-47), Andheri RTO (MH-02) with 803, 591, and 576 vehicles. Respectively. Transport officials say vehicle registration activity will gradually increase as the lockdown is reduced.
