Tow truck

Tow trucks, also referred to as wreckers, car carriers, or recovery vehicles, are specially designed and equipped for towing light passenger vehicles as well as larger commercial vehicles or heavy equipment that cannot be safely driven from a breakdown location to a repair facility, body shop, residence or other destination chosen by the vehicle owner. There are several types of tow trucks including flatbed, wheel-lift, integrated, hook and chain, and light duty that utilize different methods for securing and transporting vehicles. Flatbed tow trucks load vehicles by pulling them onto a flat open platform using a hydraulic winch system. Wheel-lift tow trucks lift the front or rear wheels off the ground and tow with only two wheels making contact with the pavement. Integrated and hook and chain tow trucks lift the entire front or rear end of a vehicle off the ground using boom winches and slings. Light duty tow trucks employ dollies to lift and tow vehicles by rolling all four wheels off the ground. Tow truck drivers must undergo training to properly operate equipment safely and prevent damage to vehicles during transport.
