Offered in sedan and hatchback forms, the 2024 Toyota Corolla is a compact car with verve—and lots of it as the decidedly rorty Corolla GR. Shop mainstream versions against the Nissan Sentra, Honda Civic, and Mazda 3.

The 2024 Corolla sees few tweaks after a mild update last year that included the addition of the fire-breathing GR Corolla.

All models have racy styling with a gaping grille flanked and topped by arrow-like headlights. Each trim has a slightly different treatment, though the GR goes farthest with its hood vents and brash body kit. The hatchback is actually a bit shorter than the sedan, though its big cargo area still makes it the more practical body style.

A grunty 2.4-liter inline-4 supplies a hearty 169 hp to the front or all four wheels via either an 8-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. Hybrids notch that figure down to just 121 hp, but they’re quiet, smooth, and exceptinoally frugal. Look for about 50 mpg combined for these versions.

The GR Corolla delivers rally-ready performance with 300 hp snarling toward each corner from an itty-bitty 1.3-liter turbo-3. It hits 60 mph in just 5.0 seconds, but feels far more manic in real-world use. Astounding grip and direct steering help its cause, but truth be told every variant of the Corolla lineup is precise and comfortable. These are genuinely fun cars in any form.

They’re also pretty comfy inside, with decent room for four passengers. Hatchbacks have less rear-seat room than sedans, but they have a wide, deep cargo area that rivals SUVs with a similar footprint. There’s too much glossy black plastic for our tastes, though classy synthetic leather can dress up the cabin well enough.

A crash-test superstar, the 2024 Corolla boasts standard collision-avoidance and driver-assistance tech such as active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights.

How much does the 2024 Toyota Corolla cost?

For 2023 the Corolla range launches at about $23,000 with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, smartphone mirroring, and a few other niceties. The hybrid version runs about $1,300 more, but could pay out fairly quickly for some drivers.

At around $37,000, the GR Corolla is a performance bargain—but odds are you’ll wind up paying a hearty premium.
