Kia EV5 Concept Previews EV9’s Little Brother

  • Kia reveals its EV5 concept, featuring a design similar to that of the larger EV9, revealed in production form in March.
  • The midsize, two-row EV5 is slated to go on sale in China first, ahead of likely sales in the US.
  • The EV5 is expected to be based on the E-GMP platform that underpins a number of Kia and Hyundai EVs.

If you liked the design of the Kia EV9, which was revealed in production form just days ago, then you’ll like the shape of its smaller sibling. Kia took the wraps off the EV5 concept this week, previewing a crossover that will be be added to Kia’s lineup, and perhaps make its way stateside.

Admittedly, it’s tough to get a sense of scale for the EV5 as it looks remarkably close to the EV9 in overall styling. But its nameplate may not necessarily dictate that it will be smaller on the outside than the EV6, which is, after all, a roomy hatchback of sorts. The nose styling and other details certainly suggest it will be taller than the much more aerodynamic Kia EV6, while also offering more interior space.

Unlike the three-row EV9, the EV5 will be purely a two-row model as photos of the concept’s interior reveal, but we wouldn’t bet on the production version receiving suicide doors. The rotating seats, which will be offered in the second row of the production EV9 on the other hand, are making another appearance after decades of absence in passenger cars, with Kia demonstrating the versatility of the concept’s interior.

The interior of the EV5 concept features rotating seats, which is something we’ll actually receive in the production EV9.

When it comes to the powertrain we can safely expect the production version, which will arrive in China later this year, to use the E-GMP platform. But the automaker hasn’t disclosed battery and layout options for this model just yet.

If the EV5 specs stick close to the smaller cars in the E-GMP lineup, we could once again see a choice of 58.0-kWh and 77.4-kWh battery packs, with the larger unit in the EV6 giving it a range of 310 miles, while the smaller pack could provide a 232-mile range.

Above all, the EV5 is expected to feature the interior space that the EV6 has kept in reserve—the E-GMP platform allows the automaker to tinker with exterior dimensions quite a bit. So the EV5 could end up being the tall and boxy, cargo-friendly version of Kia’s E-GMP vehicles.

On the outside, the concept follows the styling direction set by the larger EV9.

Just when could we see it stateside?

At the moment Kia hasn’t shared concrete plans for a North American launch, but we have trouble picturing an EV as versatile-looking as this one remaining solely on the other side of the Pacific. Kia has a solid hit on its hands with the EV6, but will be focused on rolling out the EV9 stateside later this year, after its formal debut at the New York auto show in a few weeks.

Timing for the possible US appearance of the smaller EV5 is still up in the air, as the automaker moves to expand its lineup here and on its home continent.

At what price and fully charged range would the EV5 be a compelling choice? Let us know in the comments below.
