2023 LAS VEGAS – 1968 SHELBY GT500KR CONVERTIBLE – NO RESERVE
The 1968 Shelby GT500KR is a car that needs no introduction. With its powerful Cobra Jet engine and sleek design, it’s a favorite among car enthusiasts and collectors alike. And now, Barrett-Jackson has the pleasure of introducing you to #4122 – a date-code and part-number-correct GT500KR that is selling with No Reserve during the 2023 Las Vegas Auction, June 22-24 in the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
After the debut of the Mustang in 1964, Carroll Shelby began working with Ford to develop the GT350. The GT350 was the first Shelby Mustang, launched in 1965, and was intended to be a car that would be suitable for competition and everyday use. This eventually led to two versions, the standard GT350 used for daily driving and the GT350R, created to be a racing vehicle. After designing the GT350, Shelby wanted a more powerful version of the car, so he put a Ford 428ci V8 engine into the Mustang and aptly named it the GT500. It hit the road in 1967. The 1968 GT500 was rebranded as the GT500KR, with KR standing for “King of the Road.” The GT500KR was faster than the prior year’s model, as it received the new 438ci Cobra Jet V8 engine.
This particular “King of the Road” GT500 is powered by its original Cobra Jet engine that is paired with an automatic transmission. When the engine was disassembled, it underwent a thorough inspection, cleaning, gasket replacement and painting. New standard-size rings and bearings, as well as a stock camshaft from Holman-Moody, were installed to ensure optimal performance. Additionally, the original Holley carburetor was professionally restored by Pony Carburetors.
Not only has this GT500KR had its mechanicals freshened, but it’s also equipped with some fantastic features, including air conditioning, an original engine oil cooler with an original rear axle, steel wheels, hubcaps, brake rotors and calipers. These features are a testament to the car’s originality and show that no expense was spared in maintaining its authenticity.
Perhaps one of the most impressive things about this GT500KR is its collection of awards. It has been recognized four times by the Mustang Club of America (MCA) as a Concours Gold award-winner at national shows. In 2015, it won in Loveland, Colorado, followed by wins in 2019 in Bloomington, Minnesota, and Topeka, Kansas, and then most recently in 2021 in Overland Park, Kansas.
