A MIGHTY 409 COLLECTION: Celebrating the Power and Distinction of the Iconic 1962 Chevrolet

A MIGHTY 409 COLLECTION: Celebrating the Power and Distinction of the Iconic 1962 Chevrolet

The 409 Collection from The Bryan Frank Collection – Selling with No Reserve at the 2023 Las Vegas Auction.

In 1962, Chevrolet introduced the Impala and Biscayne as distinct models with their own unique characteristics. While they shared certain similarities, several differences set them apart. The Impala held the position as the top-of-the-line model, embodying a more premium and upscale offering. On the other hand, the Biscayne was positioned as a more affordable option. This theme was present in the exterior and interior design of each vehicle, with the Impala centered around elaborate, eye-catching elements and the Biscayne with a simpler and more straightforward design.

Despite these distinctions, both the Impala and Biscayne could be equipped with one notable shared option: the 409ci engine. The 409 was available for both models, allowing customers to add a powerful and high-performance element to their chosen Chevrolet, regardless of the model trim level.

In 1962, the 409 engine underwent notable upgrades to enhance its performance. These improvements included the addition of a second 4-barrel carburetor, revised cylinder heads, and a different camshaft, resulting in a significant power boost to 409 horsepower. When paired with the BorgWarner T10 4-speed transmission and a posi-traction limited-slip differential, the 1962 Chevrolet delivered an unparalleled driving experience that surpassed anything previously offered by the division. This setup not only excelled on the drag strip but also garnered immediate respect and recognition during street races.

This collection of 409s – offered as part of six cars in the Bryan Frank Collection selling with No Reserve during the 2023 Las Vegas Auction, June 22-24 at the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center – includes three examples of the 409 engine in three unique offerings from the 1962 model year: a hardtop Impala SS, a convertible Impala SS and a Biscayne. Other vehicles in the collection include a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette Fuelie convertible, 1973 Pontiac Firebird custom coupe and a 1972 Jaguar XKE V12 roadster.
