BARBENHEIMER: A Celebration of Film, Design and Iconic Cars

“Barbenheimer” has taken the internet by storm, creating a buzz around Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” two highly anticipated summer movies making their debut on July 21. Two weeks prior to their release, AMC Theatres reported an impressive milestone – tens of thousands eager moviegoers had already secured advance tickets to witness both films on the very same day.

Barbie and Oppenheimer may seem like polar opposites in terms of their genres and themes. “Barbie” embraces a whimsical comedic atmosphere, inviting viewers into the enchanting world of the beloved Mattel doll that captured hearts since her inception in 1959. On the other hand, “Oppenheimer” delves into the realms of biographical thrillers, immersing audiences in the captivating tale of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the brilliant American scientist whose groundbreaking contributions shaped the course of atomic bomb development. Despite their stark differences, both films are generating immense anticipation.

Undoubtedly, the impact of nuclear weapons development on American culture, including design, cannot be overlooked. This influence is vividly reflected in the aesthetics of mid-century design, characterized by streamlined elegance and vibrant color palettes. During the Atomic Age, automobiles underwent a significant transformation in design that was reminiscent of rockets. Finished in pastel shades of pink, blue and green, they received lots of chrome, ornate hood ornaments, wraparound windshields and their most iconic feature: large tailfins with elaborate taillights.

The iconic 1953 Chevrolet Corvette, which inspired the custom pink Corvette prominently featured in the “Barbie” movie, perfectly exemplifies these design elements. This aesthetic extends beyond the silver screen, permeating every aspect of Barbie’s world, from her Dream House to her Dream Garage and beyond.

To commemorate the release of these remarkable films, Barrett-Jackson has curated this special gallery, a celebration with a dozen vehicles that capture the essence of Barbie’s vibrant universe, and cars that not only defined the Atomic Age but also became crown jewels in their respective collections.
