What’s the purpose of a start/stop system? What does it accomplish by shutting down the engine

Carmakers install start/stop systems, also known as idle stop-start or simply start-stop systems, in vehicles for several reasons, primarily aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.

Start/stop system improve fuel efficiency

Start/stop systems help conserve fuel by automatically turning off the engine when the vehicle comes to a complete stop, such as at traffic lights or in heavy traffic. When the engine is not running, it consumes no fuel, which reduces overall fuel consumption and saves money for the driver. Depending on the type of driving you do, start/stop technology can save up to 8% to 12% in fuel costs if you do a lot of stop and go driving. Start/stop saves very little if you do mostly freeway driving.

Start/stop system reduce pollution

By reducing the time the engine spends idling, start/stop systems also reduce harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). This contributes to lower vehicle emissions and helps automakers meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and emissions standards.

Reduced noise and vibration when stopped

It’s important to note that while start/stop systems offer many benefits, they may not be suitable for all driving conditions or preferences. Some drivers find them slightly inconvenient or may disable them if their driving patterns involve frequent short stops and starts. However, for urban and stop-and-go driving, start/stop systems can make a significant difference in fuel economy and emissions reduction.
