Verstappen grows title lead while Mercedes shows resurgence

After the first nine rounds of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship, Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen is the clear leader in the title fight thanks to six wins.

Fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez has delivered much more inconsistent performance than his teammate this season but has managed to hold onto second in the rankings. Although showing potential early on, Perez has been hampered in the last three rounds by mishaps during qualifying.

In contrast, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso has delivered good results throughout the season, managing to finish on the podium five times, taking third in each of the races run in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Miami, and second in the Monaco Grand Prix. He’s currently third in the rankings, separated by just nine points with second-placed Perez.

After a strong start to the season, Ferrari is no longer showing as much pace, which hasn’t been helped by drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz suffering some reliability issues and crashes. The opposite is the case for Mercedes-Benz AMG, which had a rocky start but managed to substantially lift its performance in recent rounds, particularly in the recent round in Spain, where both its drivers made the podium. Hamilton made the podium in Canada, though Russell retired.

As for the season’s rookies, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri became the first to score points. Piastri scored four points by finishing eighth in the third round, the Australian Grand Prix, and added to this in Monaco with an additional point. The other rookies are Williams’ Logan Sargeant and AlphaTauri’s Nyck De Vries, neither of which has secored a point.
