What’s The Biggest Profit You’ve Ever Made Selling Your Car?

The new and used car market has been in the stratosphere over the last few years and we’re sure that some of you have made out like bandits. I’ll tell you about my biggest flip over the last few years in hopes that you’ll tell me about yours. What’s the biggest profit you’ve ever made selling your car?

Notably, and right off the bat let’s be clear that if you’re a dealer, we’re disqualifying you from answering. If you’re buying and selling cars hand over fist that’s a bit of a different story. With that being said, let me tell you about my biggest profit on a car.

Years ago I picked up an R53 generation 2006 MINI Cooper S. For the unknowing, such a car leverages a supercharged four-cylinder engine to develop a factory-rated 168 hp (125 kW). In my case, it was through a six-speed manual gearbox and then to the front wheels only. My particular car also featured a 15% smaller supercharger pulley but was otherwise stock.

Another MINI of the same generation popped up for sale nearby but with a burnt-out clutch. My interest was piqued though because it also featured wheels I wanted, an aftermarket exhaust, heated seats, HID headlights, and upgraded brakes. A few calls and a $1,000 deal later, I had a second MINI Cooper that I quickly stripped parts off of.

The result was a devilish little monster that sounded absolutely fabulous, looked even better, and at least felt faster than it did initially. Of course, I took the original parts off of my first MINI and simply reinstalled them on the old one. The new one ran fine, it just couldn’t move due to the bad clutch. Despite that, I was able to put it up for sale and get a few bids.

After about a month someone came by and willingly paid me $2,300 for it before trailering it away. $1,800 in profit is going to get trumped by just about all of you but considering I walked away with a better car and some cash, I’ll rest contently here while I await your replies.
