Alfa confirms new supercar reveal for August

Alfa’s long-mooted supercar is due to be unveiled in Milan next month, its CEO has revealed. Speaking in China at the presentation of the latest Giulia and Stelvio, Jean-Philippe Imparato announced that ‘the world premiere of an iconic car’ would take place at the Alfa Romeo Museum on August 30th. PH understands that the new ’specialty’ model referred to is the supercar the firm has quietly been taking deposits on for some time, without ever showing it publicly.

“This project is a dream come true, inspired by a daring team that wanted to achieve something unique,” noted Imparato via a press release. While the CEO has hinted at the nature of the supercar since the spring – and insisted that it would be sold out long before the covers were taken off – it is not known exactly what form the new supercar will take. ‘An expression of true Alfa Romeo DNA’ is the line taken in the release, and Imparato has been widely quoted as saying that his team were working on something which could comfortably sit aside the 8C in the brand’s museum.

Both factors suggest it has lent heavily on its heritage, with some tipping the 1967 33 Stradale as the chief point of inspiration. That would certainly live up the ‘Dare to Dream’ tagline chosen for the new car, given that the mid-engined original was based on a racing prototype and featured butterfly doors. Something more in the mould of the V8-powered 8C would seem more feasible (the name ‘6C’ has already been proposed) although with production volume almost certain to be on an ultra-exclusive scale, anything is possible.

That includes means of propulsion, with Alfa declining to say whether or not it has attempted to marry retro design with a forward-looking EV powertrain. Certainly that would align with Tuesday’s announcement being made in China, where the manufacturer hopes to reach 40 per cent of its sales outside Europe. But let’s hope not, eh? The unveiling itself occurs in the same week as the Italian Grand Prix at Monza; let’s hope that Alfa uses that event as the conceptual jumping off point for something idiosyncratically loud and truly beautiful.
