P0141 Code — What it means, most common causes and fixes — Ricks Free Auto Repair Advice Ricks Free Auto Repair Advice

Learn what a P0141 code means, the most common causes and how to fix the code

A P0141 code is defined as O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 2. Bank 1 is the bank of cylinders that has the #1 cylinder. Sensor 2 is the downstream sensor located after the primary catalytic converter. That sensor is used to monitor the converter’s efficiency. It’s a generic code, so it means the same thing on all brands.

More about the P0141 code

All oxygen sensors must reach about 700°F to give accurate readings. So the sensor manufacturers build a heating element directly into the sensor. This code is telling you there’s a problem with the heater circuit to the downstream oxygen sensor. How does it know that? Because it monitors the voltage drop on the heater circuit

What are the most common causes of a P0141 code?

• Blown fuse to the oxygen sensor heater circuit
• Bad ground connection to the heater
• Failed heater (replace the oxygen sensor
• Fault in the wiring harness or connector to the downstream Oxygen sensor

Symptoms associated with the code

Check engine light
Failed emissions test

Poor fuel economy (only in rare cases). In some vehicles, if the upstream sensor signal is erractic and undependable, the PCM will use the downstream sensor to calculate air/fuel. This is rare, since it would most likely set an upstream sensor failure first

How to diagnose and fix the code

Before you automatically replace the downstream sensor simply because it shows a P0141 Code, check these items first.

• Disconnect the electrical connector to the downstream O2 sensor. Look for signs of corrosion or a bent pin
• Check the wiring harness to the downstream sensor and check for signs of cuts or chaffing or open wires
• Using a DVOM, check for the presence of battery voltage and good ground on the wires to the sensor heater
• If there’s no corrosion, no opens, and power and ground, the sensor is bad. Replace it.

Heated oxygen sensor circuit

Typical heater oxygen sensor circuit. However, some are fused separately from the PCM and the PCM monitors heater ground. Refer to a shop manual for the wiring diagram for your vehicle
